Reverse osmosis can be an effective option for reducing certain PFAS in drinking water, but the decision should begin with evidence about your water and the exact product. A claim about RO technology does not prove that every RO model has been tested for PFAS.
PFOS, PFOA and PFAS
PFAS is the name for a large family of synthetic chemicals; PFOS and PFOA are two individual PFAS. Health Canada reports that available Canadian data are limited and that measured concentrations are generally below its drinking-water objective, although levels may be higher near some industrial facilities, firefighting-foam use, landfills and wastewater-treatment plants.
If you use municipal water, ask your water provider or public-health authority whether PFAS results are available. Private-well owners should seek local advice about whether PFAS testing is relevant and use an accredited laboratory.
Can carbon filters reduce PFAS?
Some activated-carbon filters can reduce certain PFAS. It is inaccurate to assume that all pitcher or carbon filters are ineffective, just as it is inaccurate to assume that every carbon filter works. Performance depends on the exact product, contaminant, water conditions, capacity and maintenance. Look for an independent PFAS-reduction certification for the model rather than relying on the filter type alone.
When reverse osmosis may fit
Point-of-use RO treats water used for drinking and cooking by passing it through a membrane and discharging a concentrate stream. Health Canada lists tap-installed RO as a PFAS treatment option and recommends certification to NSF/ANSI 58 for PFAS removal. Confirm the exact PFAS covered by the certification and check the certifier's product directory.
Health Canada advises that residential RO should be installed at the tap because RO water installed upstream may corrode plumbing and cause contaminants such as lead to leach into the treated water. Treating all household water with RO also creates additional water-use and maintenance considerations, while exposure through bathing and other household uses is unlikely to add significantly to PFAS health risk. Where testing supports whole-home PFAS treatment, evaluate verified activated carbon or PFAS-specific resin for the required flow rather than whole-home RO.
What certification does and does not tell you
Independent certification helps verify a manufacturer's performance claim under defined test conditions. EPA noted in April 2024 that PFAS filter certifications focused on PFOA and PFOS and did not yet demonstrate reduction to EPA's then-new drinking-water limits. Check the certification body's latest directory and read the performance data sheet for the exact model, rated capacity and replacement schedule.
Compare the full ownership requirements
- Activated carbon: can be a simpler treatment path for some PFAS claims, but media capacity and timely replacement are critical.
- Reverse osmosis: can address a wider range of dissolved substances, but requires suitable pressure, a drain connection, periodic filters and membrane service, and usually a dedicated faucet.
- Ion exchange: PFAS-specific resin can be effective, but Health Canada notes that certified residential units are not currently available.
