Source-water and disinfection planning

Check whether UV fits your water and flow rate

UV can be an important disinfection step, but it must be matched to source water, peak flow, water clarity, pre-treatment, and maintenance access.

  • Well-water and bacteria-risk cases
  • Pre-filtration and flow-rate planning
  • Lamp replacement and upkeep support

Start with an assessment for a private well, mixed symptoms, uncertain pre-filtration, or installation questions. Shop directly only when the required UV specification is already known.

What UV Does—and Does Not Do

Confirm the treatment job before selecting a UV system

Model-specific performance must come from the product documentation. This guide helps identify the information needed for a sound recommendation.

What UV is designed to do

A properly specified UV system uses ultraviolet exposure to inactivate susceptible microorganisms as water passes through its chamber.

What UV does not remove

UV does not remove hardness, sediment, metals, dissolved chemicals, taste, or odour. Those concerns require separate treatment.

What must be confirmed

Source water, peak flow, clarity, upstream filtration, power, service clearance, and the maintenance schedule all affect fit.

Typical planning sequence

  1. 1Source water
  2. 2Required pre-treatment
  3. 3UV chamber
  4. 4Treated plumbing

The actual treatment order depends on the tested water and the selected equipment.

Common questions

UV disinfection questions

What UV can treat, what it cannot treat, and what must be confirmed before selection.

What does a UV water system treat?
A correctly selected UV system is used for microbiological disinfection. It does not remove sediment, hardness minerals, metals, chemicals, taste, or odour, so those concerns may require treatment before or after the UV chamber.
Why do flow rate and pre-filtration matter?
The UV chamber must deliver the required exposure at the property’s peak flow. Sediment, colour, and scale can also reduce performance or foul the quartz sleeve. Water conditions and flow should therefore be reviewed before selecting a model.
Is UV mainly for private wells?
Private-well and other source-water applications are common reasons to consider UV, but the decision should follow appropriate water testing and source review. Municipal taste or chlorine concerns usually point to filtration rather than UV.
What maintenance does a UV system need?
UV lamps and quartz sleeves require periodic attention according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Maintenance timing also depends on water quality and the equipment model. Water Doctor can identify the correct replacement parts and service plan.
Can I buy a UV system online?
Yes, when the required flow, water conditions, pre-treatment, power, and installation location are already confirmed. If any of those inputs are unclear, request a consultation before purchasing.
